How do you become a mod

We get a lot of questions from people who want to become a moderator about how we select the new mods, or offering their help. I think it’s time we get a few things cleared up. First of all: we are not in touch with the band, becoming a moderator will not give you access to their email-addresses or get you free gig tickets. Being a mod means you have to work hard to keep the boards clean and friendly. You have to monitor your forums closely as often as you can and sometimes make difficult decisions about what to do in a situation. And as you probably know, there are always people who ‘hate’ the mods, or think we hate them and have a personal vendetta against them and stalk them on the board by deleting all of their posts and locking their threads. We don’t. Trust me. We are busy enough without having to follow someone’s every move. It’s not all bad though. We have a lot of fun as a team and we all get along very well. But yes, sometimes it’s hard, stressful and annoying to be a moderator.

So, how do we select people? It depends on what we are looking for actually. Sometimes we need someone from a specific part of the world, which mostly has to do with the different timezones. When Andrew (flamingfejjery) had to leave the team we were looking for another guy to replace him, so location was less important.

  • All mods have to be over 18. We deal with some pretty heavy stuff at times.
  • Postcount is not a factor. It doesn’t matter how many posts you have, it matters what you say in them. If you’re sensible and a regular poster, you’ll get more credit than if you have a zillion useless postwhoring comments.
  • Sucking up won’t work. Sure we knew some of our mods from other websites and they became online friends before they were added to the team, but the majority of the moderators were complete strangers when we asked them to join.
  • What can you do to enhance your chances of becoming a mod? It’s pretty simple actually.
  • Follow the forum rules and stay on topic
  • Don’t cause drama or indulge in too much teenie behaviour
  • Help us out by referring people to the right threads is always a good way to be noticed
  • We usually all nominated people when we are looking for a new moderator. Lisette and I will then select someone by looking at their posts and their reputation on the forum. With the forum always growing, we’re bound to be looking for a new mod every few months.

If you have any questions about this, you can of course always PM me [poison amy] or Lisette [Lica] about it. If you have suggestions about the forum, please post in My Questionable Romance.
